Vase with polished brass mounting, designed by Alfred Roller for E. Bakalowits Sohne, Johann Loetz Witwe, PG 1/473 decoration, ca. 1901
In close cooperation with many well-known artists, the Loetz glass manufacture also produced unusual glasses, which were fitted with metal supports, mountings or wooden constructions.
Especially the Viennese designers Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and their students liked to use this combination of glass and metal or wood. In the period from 1900 to about 1906, the glass distributor E. Bakalowits Söhne commissioned such glass objects from Loetz.
Our vase was designed in 1901 by Alfred Roller, co-founder of the Salzburg Festival and former president of the Vienna Secession. Roller was a teacher at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts from 1900 to 1903 where he taught alongside Koloman Moser. During this time Roller provided some designs for Bakalowits.
