Offered by Matthew Holder
A sandstone head of the veiled Virgin.
Eastern France, c.1500.
Measures 25 x 23 x 23cm.
The sensitivity and sombre nature of this sculpture, her veiled head slightly inclined and her lugubrious eyes gazing downwards leads us to believe that it was once an element of a group depicting the Pieta in which the Virgin holds the body of a dead Christ. There remains traces of polychrome, a small piece of her veil has been broken and reattached.
