17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Moving little sculpture representing a Pietà, or Virgin of Mercy, in walnut carved in the round, from the 17th century.
Marie is dressed in a long veil forming a coat which falls in cascades of hectic folds to the ground.
The features of her face, leaning slightly over her son, express themselves in an attitude of contemplation imbued with gentleness.
Christ, wearing long wavy hair, is dressed in a perizonium course.
Her very fluid body rests on the Virgin's knees, the line of her body adapting harmoniously to that of her mother.
His right arm falls naturally to the ground in total and confident abandon.
A feeling of appeasement emerges and tenderly illuminates this touching statuette.
