Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy, oil on copper, size 16 cm x 22 cm, with wooden frame and gilded stucco, 21 cm x 27 cm, by Francken III and workshop, Flanders first part of the 17th century.
The subject is inspired by the life of Saint Mary Magdalene sinner in the Golden Legend of Jacques de Voragine (1228-1298). Retired in a cave above Marseille, every day, the angels raised her in the air, where, for an hour, she heard their music.
Frans Francken III (1607 - 1667) is the best known of the famous Francken generation of painters, born and died in Antwerp, he became master of the Saint Luc guild in this city in 1639, he was the dean from 1656 to 1666.
