17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Pietà carved on oak and made at the beginning of the 16th century in the North of France.
Marie, hands clasped, contemplates the body of her son lying at her feet.
The features of his face are expressed in an attitude of contemplation imbued with gentleness.
Note the suppleness of the important draped games of the Virgin's dress as well as her long veil forming a coat and seeming to hold the head of her Son.
Christ is wearing long wavy hair and is covered with a large perizonium.
The small size of his body gives importance here to the Benevolence of Mary, probably also in order to recall the childhood of the Saviour.
