Pair of paintings on copper

Two oil on copper forming a pair.
Antwerp School in the entourage of Hendrik Van Balen.

The left-hand side:
It depicts a subject taken from the Roman mythology: Pomona and Vertumne in a garden. The fruit and vegetables at Pomona's feet evoke the allegory of summer and the abundance of nature. The fruit nymph Pomona is so beautiful that all the country gods are in love with her. She remains indifferent, preferring to ignore the love of these Gods and devote herself only to her garden. According to Ovid's Metamorphoses, the garden God Vertumne, madly in love with her, does not give up easily and resorts to disguises using his powers to approach her. He comes to her, first as a grape-picker, then as a vineyard keeper, than as fisherman and soldier, each time praising the merits of the god Vertumne. However, she continues to despise and ignore him. In a final attempt, he comes to her in the guise of an old woman, describing the virtues of marriage and the dangers of rejecting love. But Pomona, tired of the old woman, simply refuses to listen. Finally, Vertumne decides to appear in his true form. Pomona yields to his advances and falls in love with him. In the end, they settle in her garden and tend to the fruit trees together.

The right-hand side:
It depicts an allegory of spring.
