Pair of still lifes
Oil on canvas
H. 65 cm; W. 81 cm each
These two works were produced during the second half of the 18th century in France and have come down to us as a pair. During the twentieth century, an amateur exhibited them as a pair as door hangers, which must have been their original purpose, very common for still lifes.
Both compositions are strangely mixtures of fish, feather painting and fruits. Dishes that are not usually seen together but are here accompanied by silverware, Delft earthenware and a box of chips.
