Pierre Bouret (1897-1972) - La Source

Pierre Bouret (1897-1972).
La Source.
Signed (on the terrace on the left).
H. 125 - W. 80 - D. 90 cm.

Monumental version of the second version of La Source. The first version, created in 1929 and 19 cm high, was cast in seven copies by Claude Valsuani in the 1930s, ten versions in terracotta and a number of versions in plaster were also produced.

This second version has a more idealized face and the State of France acquired a terracotta proof of it in 1961 (FNAC number 9355). The artist said of it: "What I am most proud of and what I have worked on the most is the back".

Alongside Aristide Maillol, François Pompon and Robert Wlerick, Pierre Bouret specialized in stone sculpture and created several monumental sculptures for public monuments such as the Monument to Alexandre Dumas in the town of Villers-Cotterêts, the Monument to President Armand Fallières in Mézin and numerous figures and bas-reliefs for churches, stadiums and town halls.

He was a member of the committee of the Salon des Tuileries, a member of the Salon d'Automne, a professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and a knight of the Legion of Honor.
